Why Judiciary Should Not Determine Who Wins Elections In Nigeria – Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has issued a caution to the judiciary, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the people’s right to determine the winners of elections.

He expressed concern that, instead of allowing the will of the people to prevail, the judiciary has been pronouncing winners and deciding election outcomes, rather than instructing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections again until the genuine victors emerge.

George, who previously served as a military Governor of the old Ondo State, lamented that the nation is currently experiencing what he described as a “government of the judiciary, by the judiciary, and for the judiciary.”

During a press briefing held in his Ikoyi office in Lagos, he stressed that the role of the judiciary should be to ensure fairness and justice, not to select winners. He argued that in a democracy, it is the responsibility of the people to determine the winners of elections.

George also reflected on the current state of the country, highlighting the need for positive change. He expressed concern about the electoral process, describing it as chaotic and detrimental to the nation’s progress. He criticized the manipulation of the system and noted that glitches on election day are inexcusable.

Regarding the judiciary’s role in elections, George questioned whether it is democratic for the judiciary to declare election winners and losers. He argued that the will of the people should always prevail, and if any irregularities are identified, the solution should be to conduct fresh elections, even if it needs to be done multiple times.

Additionally, George issued a warning to the federal government, advising against going to war over the coup in Niger. He emphasized that any military action should only be considered if it directly affects the national interest of Nigeria.
