BREAKING: What Appeal Court Did To Kalu’s Election

Kalu

Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, commended the Court of Appeal for dismissing the Action Alliance (AA) petition challenging his election as the representative for Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State.

The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal in Umuahia had previously struck out AA’s petition in August.

This decision was made after the party’s candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuka Igbokwe, informed the panel that he hadn’t initiated any legal action against Kalu’s election and later alleged impersonation.

Subsequently, Igbokwe lodged a complaint with the Police and the Department of State Service (DSS), urging the arrest and prosecution of those who impersonated him.

While the impersonators remained at large, the party pursued an appeal against the tribunal’s ruling.

Igbokwe, at a press conference, reiterated that he never filed an appeal against Kalu and urged the Police to apprehend his impersonators.

The appellate court, ruling on the party’s appeal, dismissed the case, deeming it a mere academic exercise. It affirmed the Deputy Speaker’s election and noted that the time limit prescribed by Section 285 of the Constitution for the appeal had expired, indicating that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

In response to the verdict, Kalu, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu, expressed gratitude to the judiciary for demonstrating a high level of legal expertise in handling the case.

He reaffirmed his dedication to duty and stated that the judgement, which now concludes the legal proceedings following the 2023 general elections, has bolstered his resolve to serve his Bende Federal Constituency and Nigeria as a whole.
