[BREAKING] 25% Votes: What Supreme Court Said Concerning Appeal Court’s Ruling On FCT
The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed the decision of the Appeal Court, stating that a candidate is not obligated to secure at least 25 percent of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be declared the president of the country.
Justice Inyang Okoro presided over the panel of justices handling Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar’s appeal against Tinubu’s victory.

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) had sought to invalidate Tinubu’s win in February 2023 on the grounds that he did not achieve 25 percent of votes in the FCT. The Appeal Court, however, deemed their petition as inconsequential.

Unsatisfied with the verdict, Atiku and Obi escalated the matter to the highest court, hoping to overturn Tinubu’s victory.
Nonetheless, on Thursday, Justice Okoro echoed the Appeal Court’s decision, affirming that the FCT does not hold a distinctive status.
Consequently, the Supreme Court aligned with the appellate court, deeming Obi and Atiku’s 25 percent claim as inconsequential.
