On Tuesday, a South African minister recounted a harrowing experience where a gun was brandished at her before she was robbed, and her bodyguards’ firearms were taken. Police have labeled this event as an “unprecedented incident.”
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga stated that she emerged physically unharmed but deeply shaken by the incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday.

“I am in one piece,” Chikunga told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday. “The whole experience was very traumatising and devastating.”

Chikunga’s vehicle was compelled to halt on a highway located south of Johannesburg after its tires were punctured by spikes, as reported by the transport ministry.
While her bodyguards exited the vehicle to attend to the tires, three individuals, described as “well-dressed” and wearing balaclavas, emerged and forcibly disarmed them, according to Chikunga.
“They opened my door… pointed a gun to my head and ordered me to come out,” she said.
Authorities stated that the thieves made off with personal possessions and two pistols belonging to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Chikunga mentioned that her laptop and phone were among the items taken. She also noted that the assailants demanded money, but she only had 200 rand ($10) in her possession.
“A manhunt has since been launched following this unprecedented incident and to bring to book those responsible,” said police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe.
This incident, which involves a prominent official with an armed security detail, is particularly noteworthy, even in a country like South Africa known for its high crime rates.
South Africa has maintained a reputation as one of the most perilous locations globally, rivaling war-torn areas.
Between April and June of this year, police documented over 500 robberies and nearly 70 homicides daily in this nation of 62 million inhabitants.
Critics have pointed to a perceived lack of adequate safety measures and the challenges in delivering justice for victims of crime.
“The SAPS is committed to executing its mandate of protecting the executive of the country and community at large,” said Mathe.
“VIP protection is one of the key priority areas for the SAPS and has been undertaken with excellence over the years.”
