BREAKING: Sylva Wins As Collation Of LGAs Results Resumes In Bayelsa

Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 11, 2023, Bayelsa State governorship election, secured victory in another local government area (LGA) as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) resumed collation of results on Monday afternoon.

The state Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta, resumed collation about 48 hours after the election took place in the oil-rich South-South state. Sylva won in Brass LGA, the first to be announced at the resumption of collation, with a tally of 18,431 votes, while Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 12,602.

So far, Diri has emerged victorious in five of the eight local government areas, while Sylva has clinched two LGAs. Results from Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenegoa, Sagbama, Nembe, Ekeremor, and Brass LGAs have been announced, leaving only Southern Ijaw.

Prof Faruq Kuta, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Of Technology, Minna, is expected to declare the winner of the poll upon the conclusion of collation today.

The election, featuring candidates from sixteen political parties, is notably seen as a two-horse race between Sylva, a former Minister of State For Petroleum Resources and ex-governor, and Diri, who is seeking re-election.

While Diri leads his APC counterpart by over 55,000 votes, results from Southern Ijaw may potentially alter the outcome in favor of the former minister.

Protests erupted in various parts of the state on Sunday, alleging voter intimidation, suppression, and vote-buying, particularly in Nembe Bassambiri, where some voters claimed elections did not take place.

Similarly, governorship polls were held on Saturday in Imo and Kogi states, and winners have been announced in both states. In Imo, the incumbent, Hope Uzodimma of the APC, emerged victorious, while Usman Ododo, also of the APC, was declared elected by INEC in Kogi.
