Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, Announces Plans for Oil Exploration in Tongeji Island and Olokola

In a significant development, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, revealed on Thursday that the state is actively engaged in discussions for oil exploration in Tongeji Island and Olokola, located in Ipokia and Ogun Waterside Local Government Areas, respectively. Governor Abiodun expressed confidence that these efforts would soon grant the state a frontier status, propelling it into the league of oil-producing states in Nigeria.

This revelation was made during the presentation of the 2024 Appropriation Bill, titled “Budget of Sustained Growth and Development,” at the Ogun State House of Assembly. Governor Abiodun highlighted the ongoing discussions regarding oil exploration in strategic locations within the state, emphasizing the positive outlook for Ogun to become an oil-producing state in the near future.

To align with this anticipated transition, Governor Abiodun announced the establishment of the Ministry of Mineral Resources. This ministry is tasked with overseeing the general administration and operation of the abundant natural resources within the state. Additionally, the creation of the Ministry of Energy was revealed, enabling the state to leverage constitutional amendments permitting sub-national governments to actively participate in the energy sector.

In preparation for the state’s new status, Governor Abiodun outlined the strategic steps being taken to diversify the state’s economy and enhance its capacity to contribute significantly to the nation’s oil production. The governor also unveiled plans for an Education Summit scheduled for the first quarter of 2024, aiming to address challenges within the education sector and implement reforms for the overall improvement of education in Ogun State
