40 Percent Of Healthcare Facilities In Katsina Dilapidated – ACOMIN

The Association of Civil Society in Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN) has attributed the major issues affecting the fight against reducing the prevalence of malaria in Katsina State to poor healthcare facilities and lack of adequate medical personnel in local communities..

The State Coordinator, Shola Babadiya, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the success recorded so far in their advocacy and awareness campaign geared towards reducing mortality rate and preventing malaria transmission among families in Katsina rural areas.

“Thirty to 40 per cent of the healthcare facilities visited are dilapidated and understaffed,” he said, urging the government to improve facilities and employ more medical personnel.

Babadiya said to achieve a better result in providing good health care services in Katsina rural communities, there is the need to address the dearth of health facilities.

He equally stressed on the need for increased funding for malaria interventions by the government at all levels and increasing support for the ACOMIN project from the state and local governments and other relevant stakeholders.

“In achieving a better result in this phase of the project, several challenges need to be addressed, namely: Poor condition of infrastructure, lack of access to good healthcare services and very limited funding with no sustainable framework.” He said.

Babadiya said ACOMIN in Katsina State has been able to create more awareness on free malaria services in communities compared to time pass.

“ACOMIN presence in eight local governments and 48 communities in the State, has increased clients inflow at facilities compared to when the information of free malaria services was not spread at the community.” The State Coordinator said.

He solicited the support of the media in joining Nigeria’s fight against malaria.
