Sowore Condemns Nigeria Police Force’s Role As Mercenaries For The Elite
Omoyele Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has lambasted the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as a mercenary force at the disposal of the criminally affluent and well-connected members of Nigeria’s elite class……READ ALSO Federal Government Drops Charges Against Sowore, Activists Celebrate Victory
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore highlighted how the wealthy and powerful individuals and corporations in Nigeria enlist the services of the police to suppress and trample upon the rights of ordinary citizens.
“The @PoliceNG is a force for hire; it is public knowledge. They get on the retainer-ship of the criminally rich, powerful and connected members of the elite in Nigeria,” Sowore remarked.
He pointed out the disturbing trend where the police, in service to this privileged class, engage in egregious acts of violence and oppression against innocent Nigerians. Sowore cited the notorious “ERISCO TOMATOGATE” incident as a glaring example of the police’s complicity in serving the interests of the elite.
Sowore also singled out prominent figures such as @Prince_NedNwoko, Sir Emeka Offor, Arthur Eze, and @APOSTLESULEMAN, alleging their involvement in using the police to perpetrate injustices against citizens. He pledged to advocate for the victims of such abuses and called for collective action to challenge and dismantle this corrupt collusion between the police and private individuals.
In another development reported by SaharaReporters, the police summoned Chioma Okoli regarding her involvement in a legal dispute with Erisco Foods Limited. This case, which stems from Okoli’s negative review of the company’s tomato product, underscores the vulnerability of ordinary citizens against powerful corporations backed by the police.
Sowore’s condemnation of the police’s role as mercenaries for the elite highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure justice, accountability, and protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria.
