Sowore Slams CBN’s 0.5% Cybersecurity Levy, Label It As Means To Robb Of Nigerians
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, has strongly criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new directive imposing a 0.5% cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions. In a statement shared on his social media platform on Tuesday, Sowore alleged that both the CBN and the Nigeria Police Force are misusing provisions of the Cybercrimes Prohibition Act. He accused the police of using outdated laws to target journalists and suppress freedom of expression.
Sowore recounted his recent visit to the Cybercrime Unit of the Nigeria Police Force to advocate for the release of Daniel Ojukwu, where authorities claimed ignorance of the amended Cybercrimes Prohibition Act signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2024. He highlighted the injustice of arresting individuals based on frivolous petitions, citing Section 24 of the amended law as protection against such actions.
Expressing frustration with the situation, Sowore condemned what he perceived as lawlessness in the country and called for a revolution. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to stand up against injustice and fight for their rights.
