The attack, which occurred around 8 pm on Thursday, left devastation in its wake, with homes razed and families shattered. One survivor, who lost four uncles in the onslaught, recounted the harrowing ordeal, revealing the extent of the brutality inflicted by the assailants.
“Fulani herdsmen attacked my home in Gwer local government of Benue state. They came in yesterday night according to my remaining uncle who escaped. He said they came around 8 pm. The entire village was razed down,” the survivor shared.
Among the victims named were Peter Tion, Nyityo Kyoon, Iorfa Ukombor, Doopinen Awua, Tyoshaa Mkaanem, Asan Ate, Asough Ate, Terzungwe Asoo Ate, MWO Mbatsavbun Gbatar (rtd), John Ndahagh Tyohemba, Tertsea Ukombor, Akuma Kpenge, Abume Kpenge, Igba Byuan, Master Ter Byuan, Terzungwe Aulugh, and a young boy whose name remains unknown.
SP. Anene Sewuese Catherine, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the attack, albeit with limited details, stating, “Yes, the Benue State Police Command received a distress call on the attack on Mbaikyor village in Mbalom council ward, Gwer local government area of the state. Police operatives were deployed, but I haven’t received a report from them about the attack. Once information is available, we will let the public know exactly what happened.”
The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in Benue State and the urgent need for decisive action to protect innocent lives and restore peace to the region.
