The abduction, which occurred on Thursday morning, has sent shockwaves through the community, exacerbating fears already heightened by previous incidents of violence in the region.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, condemned the pervasive trend of abductions and kidnappings by non-state actors in the country. He emphasized the urgent need for concerted action from all levels of government and society to address the crisis.
Munduate underscored the sanctity of schools as places of learning and growth, lamenting that they have increasingly become targets of fear and violence. He called for immediate measures to ensure the safe return of the abducted children and staff, as well as comprehensive efforts to secure schools across Nigeria.
Acknowledging the harrowing ordeal faced by the families of the victims, UNICEF pledged to provide psychological support services to assist them during this traumatic time. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with local authorities, communities, and partners to address the root causes of violence against children and to safeguard educational environments.
In conclusion, Munduate emphasized the importance of creating a peaceful environment where children can thrive without the shadow of insecurity looming over their lives. He urged collective action to reverse the current trend of deteriorating community safety, ensuring that every child can enjoy the right to education in a safe and secure environment.
