Esperanza Rae Harding, 20, has been charged in connection with the death of her son, as reported by CBS News, citing the criminal complaint.
According to the complaint, Harding arrived at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis on March 6, claiming her son had died of natural causes at the hospital five days earlier. However, there was no record of the child being admitted there.
During police interviews, Harding reportedly confessed to drowning her son in a hotel bathtub in Bloomington on Feb. 28. After drowning him, she allegedly placed his body inside a backpack and disposed of it in the trash.
Harding claimed she drowned her son because her boyfriend didn’t like the child and wanted her to put him up for adoption, intending to prove her boyfriend was her top priority.
The complaint alleges that Harding became upset when her son started crying while she was attempting to bathe, prompting her to take drastic action.
Allegedly, Harding sent a text to her boyfriend, Edwin Trudeau, indicating her intentions before the incident occurred.
Authorities also reportedly found a photo on Harding’s phone showing the boy submerged face down in the bathtub.
The boy’s father, Jesús Cazares, described his son as joyful and full of life. He expressed more anger than sadness over the situation and emphasized his desire to find his son’s body for closure.
Trudeau has been charged with aiding an offender by being an accomplice after the fact, while Harding faces charges of second-degree murder.
