Tinubu Government Holds Governors Accountable For State Police Delay As Only 16 Submit Reports To FG

This revelation came to light during the 140th NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.

According to a statement titled, ‘NEC endorses take-off of $617M i-DICE programme across states,’ by Stanley Nkwocha, the Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communications, the Federal Government is still awaiting reports from the remaining 20 states. However, there is optimism that additional states will rally behind the idea of state policing.

Nkwocha emphasized that all states across the country expressed support for the establishment of state police, citing various reasons for their endorsement. He stated, “States made presentations in support of the creation of state police. States recommended changes in the constitution and the current policing structure to enable the operationalisation of the initiative.”

While specific details regarding the contributing states were not provided, Nkwocha assured that the total number would be disclosed at the next NEC meeting as the compilation process is ongoing.

The move towards establishing state police gained momentum following the resolution reached by the Federal and state governments on February 16, 2024, to develop modalities to address the country’s security challenges.

Commenting on the issue, a Presidency official highlighted the critical role of state governors in the success of initiatives like state police and forest guards. The official stressed that while progress is being made, the ultimate responsibility lies with the states to strengthen these security measures.

Additionally, the reopening of the Nigeria-Niger border was mentioned as part of efforts to mitigate the proliferation of small arms and light weapons used by non-state actors, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and cooperation with neighboring countries to address security concerns effectively
