Safe School Commander Raises Alarm: 70% Of Schools Lack Security, Vulnerable To Kidnappings

Speaking in Abuja, Abodunrin highlighted the absence of security officers, perimeter fences, and other essential security measures across the country’s educational institutions.

Over the past decade, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing trend of school abductions, with over 1,680 children abducted and approximately 180 killed in attacks by non-state actors. Prominent incidents include the abductions at Government Secondary School in Chibok, Government Girls’ Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Government Science College in Kagara, and the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools in Emure, among others.

Abodunrin emphasized the crucial role of the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre in coordinating efforts to address security deficiencies in schools. He noted the importance of school registration with the national database to facilitate rapid response and coordination during emergencies, leveraging technologies like Google Maps for efficient navigation.

However, Abodunrin also highlighted challenges posed by poor telecommunication networks, particularly in remote areas like Kaduna, which hinder timely communication during crises. He called on state governments to prioritize the registration and protection of all schools across the country, emphasizing the need for a proactive and responsive security environment to ensure the safety of students and educators nationwide.

The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre, is spearheading efforts to urge governors to prioritize school registration and security enhancement measures. This initiative aims to establish a robust security framework to mitigate the growing concerns over the safety of young learners in Nigeria.
