CSOs Demand EFCC Compliance With Court Order In Yahaya Bello’s Case

Several civil society organizations (CSOs), comprising over 120 groups, have raised concerns over what they perceive as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) disregard for due process in its handling of former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello’s case. At a press conference held in Lagos, key figures including Debo Adeniran, Chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, and representatives from various CSOs voiced their objections to the actions taken against Bello. They highlighted that Bello was not formally invited by the EFCC and emphasized that he holds a valid court order protecting him from arrest and harassment until the court resolves the matter.

Adeniran stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and warned against undermining the judiciary. He cautioned that neglecting court orders could set a dangerous precedent and urged the government to adhere to legal procedures.

The activists urged the Federal Government to comply with existing court orders before proceeding with any legal action against Bello. They expressed concern that mishandling the situation could lead to further instability and called for a peaceful resolution.

Gbenga Soloki, another prominent activist, criticized the government’s potential involvement of the military in a civil matter, highlighting the need to respect the boundaries between civilian and military jurisdiction.

The CSOs reiterated their commitment to promoting democracy and protecting citizens’ rights, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
