NLC Outlines Seven Demands Ahead Of Workers’ Day, Advocates New Minimum Wage

This announcement comes amid widespread anticipation, with expectations that President Bola Tinubu might unveil proposed new wage standards during the celebrations.

One of the primary demands put forward by the NLC is the establishment of state and local government police forces to tackle the escalating insecurity challenges across the nation. Additionally, the NLC insists that any new minimum wage must be uniformly implemented across all states, local governments, and the organized private sector to ensure fairness and address economic disparities.

This year’s Workers’ Day holds particular significance as it follows a tentative agreement by organized labour to set the new minimum wage at N615,000 per month. However, recent increases in electricity tariffs by the Federal Government have heightened cost-of-living pressures for Nigerian workers.

The NLC’s demands also include the settlement of pension arrears, the establishment of compressed natural gas conversion centers in all senatorial districts, and the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries. Furthermore, the NLC calls for the creation of state and local government police forces and the granting of local government autonomy and infrastructure support schemes.

Meanwhile, the NLC awaits an invitation to the next meeting of the tripartite committee on minimum wage. Former TUC president Peter Esele warned against the arbitrary fixing of a new minimum wage, urging both the Federal Government and organized labour to reach a concrete agreement to avoid potential protests and strikes.

Additionally, the demand for the creation of state and local government police forces follows reports that 16 state governors have expressed support for establishing state police, with recommendations for constitutional changes to enable this initiative.

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate Workers’ Day, the NLC’s demands underscore the pressing need for reforms to address economic inequalities, improve security, and enhance the welfare of workers across the country.
