Nigeria And China Collaborate On Development Of Intelligent Transport Systems

According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria has taken a significant step toward modernizing its transport infrastructure following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ITS Nigeria and the China Intelligent Transportation Systems Association to advance intelligent transport technology and promote knowledge exchange.

The agreement was formalized in Xiamen during the 2026 China International Transportation and Safety Expo (CITSE), where the Co-Founder, Vice President and International Director of ITS Nigeria, Debo Shopade, represented the Nigerian side.

Speaking on the development, Shopade explained that the partnership will prioritize capacity building, technology transfer, expansion of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) adoption, and stronger collaboration between Nigerian stakeholders and Chinese transport technology providers.

He stressed that Nigeria’s rapidly expanding urban population and worsening traffic congestion have made it necessary to adopt innovative, data-driven transport solutions beyond conventional road construction, noting that intelligent infrastructure is now critical to improving economic productivity and public safety.

Intelligent Transportation Systems, according to him, combine sensors, cameras, communication networks, and data analytics to optimize traffic flow, reduce road accidents, and enhance overall mobility efficiency, adding that such systems are already in use across several countries, particularly China.

Also speaking at the ceremony, President of ITS China, Wang Yunpeng, stated that the partnership is designed to promote the global expansion of proven transport solutions while fostering mutually beneficial cooperation between both nations.

Shopade further described the agreement as a practical outcome of ITS Nigeria’s international engagements, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to creating opportunities for members, government partners, and commuters through technology-driven transport reforms and global collaboration.
