According to Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, the assailants launched their attack but were met with swift resistance from officers on duty. Daso disclosed that the security breach was promptly addressed through a coordinated police operation.
Detailing the events leading up to the confrontation, Daso stated, “During a joint operation raid at the Kasuwar Fara on the 30th of April, eight individuals, including seven males and a female, were apprehended for engaging in illicit activities involving drug peddling and consumption, as well as suspected ties to insurgent groups.”
He further added, “Shortly after the arrests, a group purporting to be repentant Boko Haram members, disguised in military attire, attempted to storm our police station at Ibrahim Taiwo. Fortunately, our officers successfully repelled the attack, preventing any detainees from being freed.”
The assailants, undeterred by their failure at the police station, proceeded to target checkpoints operated by the Nigeria Immigration Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) near the township gate, setting them ablaze.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers as approximately twenty individuals donning military camouflage and brandishing machetes. They forcibly entered the police station, overpowering some officers and enabling the escape of a few detainees.
Despite the chaos, law enforcement authorities managed to maintain control with the arrival of reinforcements, including the CRACKS team, a specialized unit. While the attackers inflicted injuries on some officers and bystanders, their primary objective of releasing detainees was ultimately thwarted.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack on the police station and other targeted locations.
