Naira’s Value Drops To ₦1,365/$ In Parallel Market
The Nigerian currency, the Naira, witnessed a notable depreciation, reaching ₦1,365 per dollar in the parallel market yesterday, marking a significant decline from ₦1,320 per dollar recorded on Tuesday……READ ALSO Naira’s Depreciation: A Reflection Of Nigeria’s Economic Struggles
According to data from the Financial Markets Dealers Quotations (FMDQ), the Naira also experienced a dip in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), sliding to ₦1,402.67 per dollar.
This recent depreciation underscores the evolving dynamics in the forex market, with the Naira shedding ₦11.71 in the official NAFEM rates within a single day.
The fluctuations highlight the persisting volatility in Nigeria’s foreign exchange markets, attributed to various economic factors. Notably, the gap between the parallel market and the NAFEM rates underwent a significant adjustment, narrowing from ₦70.96 on Tuesday to ₦37.67 by Wednesday.
The diminishing disparity implies a potential tightening in the forex market, which could be influenced by heightened activities or interventions by financial authorities.
However, the continuous depreciation of the Naira raises concerns for businesses and households grappling with inflation and mounting living expenses. Moreover, it presents challenges for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in its efforts to stabilize the currency and address broader economic implications.
