New Demand Arises As PDP Zonalizes-Chairmanship To Abia-North (Details)

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to zone the position of state chairman to the Abia North senatorial zone, following a caucus meeting held on Sunday.

The decision to maintain the zoning arrangement was reached after the adoption of recommendations by the PDP committee on rotation and zoning. Former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chikwendu Kanu, moved the motion to uphold the zoning arrangement, which was seconded by former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

In a statement signed by Abraham Amah, the Vice Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary, it was disclosed that the PDP caucus had redistributed positions among the senatorial zones. Positions formerly held by Abia South were allocated to Abia North, those held by Abia North were assigned to Abia Central, and positions held by Abia Central were transferred to Abia South.

While some PDP members have commended the zoning formula for promoting stability and equity, others from Abia North have expressed dissatisfaction. They argue that the zoning of the PDP chairmanship to their zone does not adequately address the perceived injustice experienced during the 2023 elections.

Ogbo Kalu, a party chieftain from Bende LGA in Abia North, emphasized that the zoning of the chairmanship does not suffice as compensation for the grievances of Abia North. He asserted that the gubernatorial ticket should be zoned to Abia North in recognition of past injustices and to ensure fairness within the party.
