Nationwide-Strike: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Short-Down Operations (Details)
In response to the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi has limited its operations to providing only emergency services.
The decision follows the Bauchi chapter of the NLC joining the industrial action, leading to a reduction in medical activities at the hospital.
During a visit to the Teaching Hospital on Monday, our correspondent noted a decrease in the number of medical practitioners attending to patients. Areas such as the maternity ward, male surgery ward, gynaecology department, male medical ward (‘Sani Sami’), and paediatric ward witnessed reduced activity.
A staff member at the paediatric ward, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that while routine activities are ongoing, only emergency cases are being prioritized.
Usman Abdullahi Koli, the Public Relations Officer of the Teaching Hospital, affirmed that the management is ensuring the continuation of emergency services and closely monitoring the strike’s developments.
Meanwhile, within the Bauchi metropolis, numerous public offices remained closed, with notices indicating full participation in the strike. Both state and federal secretariats were shuttered, alongside all banks in the area, turning away customers who sought services.
Ibrahim Mai Kudi, the acting chairman of the NLC in the state, emphasized their commitment to total compliance with the strike directive received from the national union. He expressed disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to conclude negotiations on a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
