Nigerian Medical Association In Akwa-Ibom Impeaches Chairman And Vice Over Alleged Misconduct (Details)

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, has impeached its Chairman, Dr. Emem Abraham, and Vice Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Utuk, citing alleged “gross misconduct.”

Dr. Usenobong Morgan Akpan, the association’s Secretary, has been appointed as the Acting Chairman until the present administration’s tenure ends on July 16, 2024.

Addressing journalists at a press conference held at the Doctors’ Mess in Uyo, the Acting Chairman, Akpan, stated that the impeachment stemmed from a motion moved during the association’s Ordinary General Meeting.

Akpan outlined various alleged instances of misconduct leading to the impeachment, including irregularities in financial reporting, suppression of views during congresses, inconsistent financial figures, and lack of proper accountability.

He justified his appointment as Acting Chairman, citing compliance with the association’s Constitution, as he held the highest office until his elevation and was deemed most qualified to lead the NMA.

The press conference aimed to inform the public about the new NMA administration in Akwa Ibom State. Akpan emphasized that, following Congress’s resolutions, all privileges accorded to the impeached Chairman and Vice Chairman are withdrawn.

Regarding the forthcoming association elections in July, Akpan declared his disinterest in contesting for any position.
