Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Administration; A Legacy Of Broken Promises
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Administration; A Legacy Of Broken PromisesIn the year 2016, the good people of Edo State entrusted Governor Godwin Obaseki with the mandate to lead the State to the next level of progress and development. He realised this mandate with the promise of continuing the excellent legacy of his predecessor, His Excellency, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
However, eight years down the line, the government has failed to deliver on its promises, leaving the teeming Edo people disillusioned and disappointed. In every aspect of the directive principles of State policy, Governor Obaseki has performed abysmally. A few examples will suffice;
Poor road infrastructure: Despite promising to fix roads, many remain in disrepair making commuting on these deplorable roads scattered across the State, a laborious one. There is a huge infrastructural deficit in the State leading to an astronomical increase in the cost of transportation. Also, due to the abandonment of the visionary Benin Storm Water project, the Edo Landscape now grapples with perennial flooding. Other promises like the Gele Gele seaport, Edo North Airport, and the promised Ambrose Ali University flyover have remained unfulfilled.
Inadequate healthcare: A government that places tourism over the well-being of its citizens certainly, doesn’t know it’s priorities. Hospitals across Edo State lack adequate funding, essential equipment, and qualified Manpower. This has left Edo people without access to quality and affordable healthcare. Our primary healthcare centers which ought to be closest to the people are in a pitiable state of disrepair.
Unemployment: Youth unemployment in Edo State remains one of the highest in the federation yet Obaseki promised 200,000 jobs. How shameful! Obaseki has not only failed in keeping promises but he has outrightly neglected this important sector of the economy.
Education: The educational sector in Edo State has never had it so bad like it is currently experiencing under Obaseki. Public schools in Edo State are in shambles, suffering from inadequate funding, outdated curricula, and poor infrastructure. Edo best now turning to Edo worst. The once prestigious Ambrose Ali University (AAU) is now a shadow of its former self due to the highhandedness of Edo State’s outgoing Governor.
As they say, “talk is cheap”. Obaseki’s promises on the resumption of scholarship and bursary grants to underprivileged student has ended becoming mere rhetorics. Instead, he made matters worse by taking tertiary education out of the reach of the poor due his astronomical increases in tuition fees imposed on the students by Obaseki and his co-travelor.
Agriculture: With statling figures on the amount of World Bank assisted projects, and the Federal government’s assisted interventional projects, it is very disappointing to see this government lack of support and it’s adverse effects on the cost of foodstuffs in Edo State due to food insufficiency. The famous Sobe farm and others remained within the realms of MoUs.
Security: No meaningful development can be achieved in an unsecured environment. The lack od a deliberate policy on security and crime management despite being the Chief Security Officer of the State is a classical example of a failed government. Despite the humongous monthly security votes, the State is still plagued with an increasing crime rates. With several communities being ravaged by herders and bandits, Kidnapping have become a thriving business with high profiled individuals abducted. This is pathetic to say the least.
The current Edo state government have failed to fulfill its promises, leaving citizens feeling betrayed, neglected, disappointed and angry. Now it’s time for a change in leadership towards birthing a new vision for the State’s development.
Let’s vote Senator Monday Okpebholo aka Akpakomiza as Governor of Edo State and Rt Hon Dennis Idahosa aka DENCO as Deputy Governor. With these amazing duo, the era of unfulfilled promises will be a thing of the past. Edo will be great again.
