EDO 2024: Unveiling Senator Monday Okpebholo’s Agenda For Agricultural Revolution For Sustainable Development And GrowthThe incoming administration of Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State promises to be an encompassing and all-inclusive one. His commitment is to reposition Edo State on the path of accelerated and sustainable growth through an Agricultural revolution.
Having understudied the huge potential and opportunities that abound in the agricultural and agro-allied value chain, an integral part of his vision for Edo State as captured in his 5-point Agenda is an intensive and broad-based agricultural reform and revitalization.
In his envisioned blueprint for agricultural revolution in the state, priority will be given to some pressing areas which include;
1. Post-Harvest Handling To Prevent Loss; Post-harvest handling in agriculture is a part of the agricultural value chain. This will help in the processing of agricultural produce into other finished variants. This will also help to prioritize the upgrade and provision of infrastructures like good road networks to farm settlements and transport facilities to ease the movement of farm produce from the farms to different points of need.
2. Adoption of Technology; -As a professional in the field of information and Communication Technology, Senator Monday Okpebholo is passionate about deploying modern technology into mechanized farming, processing, and storage. The use of technology will also improve the quality of packaging of agricultural products therefore increasing the value, acceptance, and marketability of agro-based products.
3. Develop Storage Infrastructure: The administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo is set to leverage his technological expertise to develop modern storage facilities that would drastically reduce the loss incurred by farmers in the area of non existent storage facilities. This includes building and improving storage facilities such as cold storage, silos, and warehouses to reduce spoilage and improve the quality of stored produce.
4. Initiate Market Assess; This is to connect farmers to reliable customers, retailers, wholesalers, and processors to reduce the time of storage and provide prompt marketing of agricultural produce at a reasonable and profitable rate. Also, to support farmer’s cooperatives for better bargaining power.
5. Implementation of Agricultural Waste Management Project: Being a technologically driven personality, Senator Monday Okpebholo will explore initiatives to convert agricultural waste into energy, reduce environmental impact, and provide alternative means of income for farmers. This is also a means of achieving clean energy in the environment.
6. Farmer incentives/Motivation: This is perhaps the most important aspect of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s agricultural agenda. He will provide incentives to encourage the teeming youth to get involved in large-scale farming.
The above shows that the agricultural reforms of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s incoming administration would be revolutionary. This will engender food security, and sufficiency, and also guarantee prosperity for both the farmers and the State government while providing consumers with organic homegrown products.
