Mahdi Shehu’s Bold Critique: Is Betta Edu Making a Comeback?

Renowned human rights activist Mahdi Shehu has stirred controversy by challenging the alleged return of Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, to a position of power within the current administration. In a recent post on his verified X account, Shehu expressed serious concerns about Edu’s potential reinstatement, suggesting it undermines President Tinubu’s commitment to transparency and good governance.

Shehu highlighted that Edu’s use of her former ministry’s letterhead for public statements, combined with the lack of response from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Presidential Villa, implies that she may have been reappointed through what Shehu calls the “wide-open front door of the Villa.” This, he argues, would contradict the administration’s promises of integrity and accountability.

The activist warned that such a move would seriously damage the administration’s credibility on issues of equity, justice, and fairness. If Edu is indeed reinstated, it would suggest that President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting morality and good governance is questionable.

Shehu also proposed a reevaluation of past convictions, including the release of individuals like former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who were accused of financial crimes. In a provocative statement, Shehu even suggested that executed armed robbers should be honored with state burials and compensation for their families. He pointed to Edu’s alleged return and Abdullahi Ganduje’s appointment as APC Chairman as evidence that Nigeria is sliding into a state of “rogue” governance under Tinubu.
