Obasanjo Criticizes NASS for Fixing Their Own Salaries and Allowances
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized members of Nigeria’s National Assembly for setting their own salaries and allowances. Speaking in a recent interview shared on X by CHANNELS TV, Obasanjo condemned the practice as unethical and improper.
Obasanjo, a prominent businessman and political figure, expressed his disapproval of the National Assembly’s practice of determining their own compensation. He argued that such actions are morally questionable and undermine the integrity of the legislative process.
In his remarks, Obasanjo stated, “With all due respect, you are not supposed to fix your salaries and allowances, it is not right. But you decide what you give yourselves, including newspaper allowances, pants allowances, you give yourselves all sorts of names. It is not right for me to determine what to pay myself, it’s immoral. And you’re doing it, the Senate too is doing it. And in some cases, the executive gives you what you’re not entitled to.”
Obasanjo’s comments have sparked a fresh debate about the transparency and fairness of compensation practices within Nigeria’s legislative body. His critique highlights ongoing concerns about accountability and ethical standards in the management of public funds.
