Nurses In Nigeria Under Threat! Fintiri Issues Dire Warning Against The ‘Japa’ Syndrome Exodus

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has expressed his worries about the increasing trend of nurses and healthcare professionals leaving the country, commonly referred to as the ‘Japa’ syndrome. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader urged nurses in Adamawa to stay committed to their profession.

According to Naija News, Fintiri made this appeal during a meeting with the national president of the Fellowship of Christian Nurses, Nigeria, and other officials at the Government House. He was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Edgar Amos Sunday, who emphasized the urgent need for dedicated healthcare workers in Adamawa State.

Fintiri highlighted the importance of a reliable nursing workforce in delivering quality healthcare services to the community. He noted that his administration is actively working to improve healthcare infrastructure, which includes the construction and rehabilitation of cottage hospitals, upgrading medical facilities, and enhancing the welfare of healthcare workers.

The governor encouraged nurses to remain focused on their duties, work collaboratively, and prioritize patient care, emphasizing their critical role in the state’s healthcare system. This meeting was held in anticipation of the upcoming national conference of the Fellowship of Christian Nurses, set to take place in Adamawa State, where Governor Fintiri is expected to serve as the guest of honor.

Peter Obi Advocates for Nurses’ Right to Seek Opportunities Abroad

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has stated that nurses and other professionals seeking opportunities abroad should not be hindered. He argued that their migration could be beneficial to the country.

Speaking at St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, Obi noted that foreign remittances can serve as a valuable source of revenue for Nigeria. He highlighted the significance of education and health as the future currencies for transactions.

Obi pointed out that with over 200 million people in Nigeria, there is no justification for restricting individuals from pursuing better opportunities outside the country. He called on Nigerian leaders to focus on training more professionals.
