This was revealed by the State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Monday following the Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu explained that the insurance plan will be available to all civil servants, with each employee required to contribute 5% of their basic salary. However, Governor Otti has approved a reduced contribution of 2.5% for the first three months.
Additionally, the state government has approved a major upgrade and renovation of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba. The Abia State Specialist Hospital has also regained its accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for the training of medical interns, with the institution’s training capacity increasing from 24 to 36 interns.
Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya, the Commissioner for Health, stated that civil servants will begin accessing the insurance services in three months. He also confirmed that each employee is entitled to coverage for four dependents, including their spouse. Plans are also underway to include individuals from the informal sector in the scheme.
