In an emotional speech during a memorial service for the late Madam Ani-Gunn Rhoda Ikiogha, the mother of former Chief of Staff and Agriculture Commissioner, Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, Diri revealed how Jonathan’s intervention turned a political setback into a blessing.

He recalled a time when, alongside Chief Ikiogha, they were political allies of Jonathan long before his presidency. Despite their close collaboration, the pair had a falling out when their political ambitions no longer aligned.

At one point, Diri and Ikiogha had planned to contest for Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively. However, Jonathan’s national agenda took precedence, and the duo’s aspirations were overshadowed. Diri admitted that it was this political shift that ultimately paved the way for his own success in the 2015 House of Representatives elections.

“Jonathan’s intervention changed everything,” Diri confessed. “The Senate position was zoned to Yenagoa, and that’s when I got the opportunity to contest, even though Chief Ikiogha could not secure the ticket.”

Despite their earlier differences, Diri credited Ikiogha’s significant support for his re-election in 2023, even at the risk of becoming a target for the opposition. He also commended the late Ma Ikiogha, whose unwavering support and love for her son and his associates became a symbol of unity across party lines.

Governor Diri concluded by honoring her legacy, highlighting her devotion to her Christian faith and the countless lives she impacted. He encouraged the Ikiogha family to find solace in her enduring legacy.
