Heartbreaking Decision: Gov. Makinde Calls Off Birthday Festivities To Mourn Ibadan Tragedy

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has made the poignant decision to cancel his upcoming birthday celebrations in order to honor the victims of the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children.

In a heartfelt statement made on Friday in Ibadan, while meeting a South-East delegation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde described the incident as deeply sorrowful, regrettable, and entirely preventable. He expressed his condolences and highlighted the emotional toll the tragedy had on the entire state.

The Governor, who had planned a celebration on December 25th, explained that instead of festivities, he would spend the day in quiet reflection. “It is a somber day for me personally. I have decided to cancel all events and stay indoors. There will be no party,” he said, adding that the year had been particularly challenging, referencing other incidents like the Bodija explosion earlier in the year.

Makinde also thanked the South-East PDP delegation, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, for their early and heartfelt condolences, noting that their visit offered much-needed support. The delegation included key PDP figures such as former Ebonyi State Governor Dr. Sam Egwu, Senator Ben Obi, and others, all of whom expressed their solidarity during this difficult time.
