The event, organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, promised a day of fun for over 5,000 attendees, with gifts and scholarships advertised. The excitement spread quickly, drawing people from near and far.

Sitting with Saturday Vanguard, Iya Ola described the events leading up to the disaster, revealing that just days before, a pastor from a white garment church, someone she had never met, had urged her to fast and pray for three days. At the time, she dismissed it as a spiritual exercise, unaware that it was a warning of the tragedy to come.

She explained, “I heard about the funfair through Alhaji Oriyomi Hazmat’s popular radio program. It seemed like an opportunity for my children to have a joyful day, to forget our struggles, even if just for a moment.” But when they arrived at the venue, disaster struck. As the gates opened, a massive crowd surged forward, overwhelming the entrance. In that terrifying moment, Iya Ola lost sight of her children and began calling out for them, but the noise was deafening. It was then that the full weight of the spiritual warning she had ignored hit her.

“I wish I had listened more carefully to the prophecy. I feel like I’ve lost a part of my soul. The pain is unbearable,” she lamented, as she reflected on her grief.

The Oyo State Government has expressed condolences over the loss of lives and pledged support to the families of the victims. In a statement, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, clarified that the state government was not involved in the planning of the event. He stressed the importance of proper organization and safety measures, particularly for events involving children and vulnerable individuals.

Eyewitnesses described the scene at the entrance, where the overwhelming crowd led to chaos and the tragic stampede. The tragic incident has sparked conversations about the need for better safety measures at public events.
