Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president highlighted the refinery’s return to operation as a key step in revitalizing the nation’s refining capacity.

The Warri Refinery, which had been dormant for several years, has resumed operations at 60% capacity, now producing vital petroleum products such as Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and naphtha. This follows the earlier restart of the Port Harcourt Refinery’s 60,000-barrel-per-day facility in November, marking a significant effort to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

President Tinubu praised the efforts of NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, for leading the charge to restore the country’s refining capabilities. “The reopening of Warri Refinery fills me with joy and restores hope for a better future, one we’ve promised Nigerians,” Tinubu stated.

This reopening is a critical milestone in the administration’s broader strategy to rehabilitate Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries, a project that began under former President Muhammadu Buhari and was accelerated under President Tinubu’s leadership.

The president also reiterated his commitment to achieving energy security and establishing Nigeria as Africa’s top crude oil refining hub, urging NNPCL to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery.

“This is a great way to close out the year, following the success of the Port Harcourt Refinery. I congratulate Mele Kyari and his team for their hard work in restoring Nigeria’s refining pride and transforming us into a global refining powerhouse,” President Tinubu added.
