Tragedy Strikes: Yahoo Boys Fatally Attack EFCC Officers In Fiery Shootout
In a shocking turn of events, armed internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo Boys, opened fire on operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Anambra State, leaving one officer dead and another critically…Tragedy Strikes: Yahoo Boys Fatally Attack EFCC Officers In Fiery Shootout
injured.
The EFCC team, on a mission to apprehend the suspected cybercriminals on Friday, encountered violent resistance as the suspects unleashed gunfire, killing an assistant superintendent instantly. Another officer was severely injured and rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Sources revealed the operatives had traveled from their zonal headquarters in Enugu to carry out the operation.
EFCC and Police Yet to Comment
While an EFCC spokesperson promised a thorough investigation, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the tragic incident.
The attack comes amid renewed efforts by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to refine strategies for combating financial crimes. Traditionally, Yahoo Boys were seen as non-violent offenders who were apprehended without incident, making this violent encounter particularly alarming.
The deceased officer, who recently completed a promotional examination, was described as diligent and dedicated by his colleagues.
Concerns Over Insurance for EFCC Operatives
The incident has reignited concerns over the welfare of anti-graft officers. An EFCC officer, speaking anonymously, revealed that the agency no longer provides life insurance for its personnel, a practice that ceased during the tenure of Farida Waziri.
“The families of fallen officers receive no compensation. The officer who died today won’t have his family supported, and that is deeply troubling,” the source lamented.
Another officer added, “Can we say he died for nothing? This is unacceptable.”
Rising Risks in Anti-Graft Operations
The attack highlights the increasing dangers faced by EFCC operatives as they tackle more emboldened criminal elements. Observers are calling for urgent reforms, including enhanced personnel safety measures, to ensure the agency can effectively carry out its mission.
