Kwara Targets Open Defecation: Government Clamps Down On Ilorin Properties with Seals

In a decisive move to combat open defecation, the Kwara State government has sealed three buildings in Ilorin, the state capital. The affected properties are situated in the Adualere area of Ilorin East Local Government Area. This action follows a thorough investigation by the Environmental Health Officers in the Ministry of Environment, who determined that the buildings were in violation of environmental regulations.

In addition to sealing the buildings, residents along Obbo-Ayegunle Road have been instructed to clear refuse-filled drainage systems to ensure the free flow of water. Furthermore, a poultry farm in the Irewolede area of Ilorin was fined N50,000 for environmental law violations and mandated to procure a waste bin, which was promptly acquired following the enforcement.

Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, the Commissioner for Environment, emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for all residents. She warned against indiscriminate waste dumping in drainage systems, highlighting the availability of government-provided facilities for effective waste evacuation. She also noted that Kwara State has been recognized for its efforts in eradicating open defecation and sustaining a “Cleaner Kwara,” prioritizing hygienic conditions to foster social and economic activities.

She cautioned residents to desist from violating environmental regulations or face legal consequences. She also expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his unwavering support in sustaining the initiative for a clean and safe Kwara. She commended the environmental health officers for their dedication and appealed to residents to collaborate with the government’s efforts in maintaining a safe, clean, and hygienic Kwara State.
