stating that an opportunity to address mistakes in the bills is now available.

Ndume shared his views during an interview with the BBC Hausa service, addressing the recent decision by the state governors regarding the tax reform bills.

The 36 state governors, under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), recently reversed their opposition and expressed support for the bills, emphasizing the need for an “equitable” Value-Added Tax (VAT) distribution formula among states.

While Ndume acknowledged the governors’ new stance as a positive development, he maintained that further clarifications and transparency are necessary before passing the bills into law.

“What the governors have done is commendable, but it is insufficient because we still lack a comprehensive understanding of the bills,” Ndume said. He urged for a more inclusive approach, highlighting the importance of avoiding rushed decisions that could lead to errors.

“The door for correcting mistakes is now open, unlike before when the bills were rigid. The responsibility now lies with the legislators and the general public to ensure the bills are thoroughly reviewed,” Ndume concluded.
