Sultan Announces Continuation Of Fasting In Nigeria As Moon Not Sighted

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that fasting in Nigeria will continue on Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan has not been sighted.

The NSCIA explained that the declaration of Eid-El-Fitr will depend on the sighting of the moon. The statement read, “Muslims are encouraged to search for the crescent of Shawwal on the 29th of Ramadan. If the crescent is sighted in accordance with established moon sighting and verification procedures, His Eminence will declare Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of Eid-el-Fitr.”

Thus, the official end of Ramadan and the commencement of Eid celebrations in Nigeria will hinge on the confirmation of the crescent moon, which has yet to be sighted by local authorities.

In contrast, reports from Saudi Arabia confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon for Shawwal, marking the official end of Ramadan in the Kingdom. Saudi authorities have declared that Eid-El-Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025, following the verification of the moon sighting after Maghrib prayers.
