Life-Saving Revolution: FG to Slash Drug Prices, Ensure Quality Medicines Nationwide”

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of MediPool, a national group purchasing organization aimed at driving down the cost of essential medicines and healthcare supplies across Nigeria.

According to Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, the initiative is intended to enhance access to affordable, high-quality medicines while also boosting local pharmaceutical production. Speaking after the FEC meeting, Pate stated that MediPool will operate as a public-private partnership, leveraging the federal government’s purchasing power to secure more favorable pricing from suppliers.

“It utilizes the government’s monopsony advantage as a major buyer to negotiate better rates and streamline the supply of commodities,” he explained.

The MediPool initiative will cover a broad range of functions, including procurement planning, logistics, regulatory oversight, distribution, quality assurance, and supply chain management. In addition, the program aims to support domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing by encouraging import substitution and attracting local investment in drug production.

“It will also encompass financial systems, training, contingency planning, and mechanisms to guarantee consistent access to essential drugs through strategic partnerships,” Pate added.

He revealed that MediPool has already passed evaluation by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and has been benchmarked against similar successful models in countries such as Kenya, South Africa, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia.

“We see this as a transformative initiative that can reshape Nigeria’s pharmaceutical market—by lowering prices, improving quality, and stimulating local manufacturing,” Pate emphasized.

He also noted that the administration has been working for over a year to develop effective responses to the rising cost of medicines in the country.

“This isn’t unique to Nigeria. Even countries like the United States are introducing executive actions to curb pharmaceutical costs,” he said.

As an example, he referenced a recent announcement by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who revealed plans to sign an executive order aimed at slashing prescription drug prices by 30% to 80%.

However, health experts caution that such global pricing interventions may trigger shifts in pharmaceutical supply chains, which could pose challenges for countries like Nigeria in accessing certain branded or specialized medicines.
