NiMet, HEDA Strengthen Climate Support for Nigerian Farmers
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) have signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing climate and weather information services for smallholder farmers across Nigeria.
This new agreement, announced via a press statement from NiMet’s media office on Wednesday, formalizes a collaboration that originally began in 2010. The MoU was signed at NiMet headquarters and is focused on empowering rural farming communities through timely, accessible, and practical climate data.
Representatives from HEDA, including Executive Secretary Sulaimon Arigbabu and Legal Officer Miss Tonye Dappa, praised NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, for his support and leadership. Anosike emphasized the importance of partnerships in turning climate science into meaningful grassroots solutions, and offered NiMet’s facilities to co-create farmer-focused educational content.
The agreement is expected to:
-
Improve early warning systems,
-
Promote climate-smart agriculture,
-
Enhance disaster preparedness, and
-
Strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate impacts.
Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive and equitable access to vital climate information to support sustainable farming and rural livelihoods.
