Lagos Farmer Sentenced to 14 Years for S3xually Assaulting Daughter

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State S3xual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced 61-year-old farmer, Abayomi Abraham, to 14 years in prison for attempted s3xual assault by penetration involving his 15-year-old biological daughter.

The sentencing came after Abraham changed his plea to guilty under a plea bargain agreement. Initially charged in February 2024 with four serious offenses—defilement, s3xual assault by penetration, attempted abortion procurement, and indecent treatment of a child—his charge was later amended due to the plea deal.

Prosecutor Bukola Okeowo informed the court that the amended charge was based on Section 272 of the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015), and that the convict voluntarily agreed to the plea.

Justice Oshodi affirmed that Abraham understood the nature and gravity of his guilty plea and acted without coercion. The judge underscored the severity of the crime, pointing out that the victim was not only a minor but the convict’s own daughter, to whom he owed a duty of protection and care.

“You violated that sacred trust in the most despicable manner possible,” Oshodi stated, highlighting that while the plea spared the girl from testifying, it did not diminish the seriousness of the abuse.

The 14-year sentence was ordered to take effect from August 31, 2022, the date Abraham was first remanded. Additionally, the judge directed that Abraham’s name be entered into the Lagos State S3x Offenders Register, as stipulated by Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and S3xual Violence Agency Law (2021).
