Osun Accident: Driver Sleeps Off, Truck Overturns with Passengers and Livestock

Two people lost their lives, and 15 others sustained injuries in a tragic truck accident at Iwo Junction along the Osogbo–Gbongan road in Osun State on Wednesday morning.

According to a statement from the Osun Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident occurred around 8:26 AM and involved a truck en route from Kebbi State to Ikire. The vehicle was overloaded with approximately 70 animals — including cattle, goats, and sheep — as well as numerous human passengers riding on top of the livestock.

FRSC spokesperson Agnes Ogungbemi said preliminary findings indicated that the driver had repeatedly fallen asleep behind the wheel. He allegedly dozed off again near the Surprise Hotel area in Gbongan, causing the truck to veer off the road, tip into a ditch, and eject its human and animal occupants violently.

The impact killed two individuals on the spot and injured 15 others. Some animals died in the crash, while others were left too injured to stand.

Emergency responders from the FRSC moved two victims and one deceased individual to a private hospital in Gbongan. Thirteen additional injured passengers and another fatality were also taken to a second medical facility in the area.

Commenting on the incident, FRSC Osun Sector Commander Mr. Leye Adegboyega emphasized the importance of roadworthiness and driver alertness, warning that unfit vehicles would no longer be tolerated on Osun highways.
