Armed Attack in Kwara Leaves Vigilante Dead, Homes in Ruins

A deadly assault by suspected members of the ‘Mahmuda’ group rocked Karongi town in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a local vigilante and the destruction of several homes.

The attack, which unfolded between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., caught the town largely unprotected as many vigilantes had traveled for Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, leaving a critical security gap. The gunmen operated freely until reinforcements comprising soldiers and vigilantes from neighboring areas arrived and repelled them.

Confirming the incident, the Emir of Yashikira, Umoru Sariki, disclosed that numerous houses were torched and urged the Federal Government to urgently deploy a permanent military unit to Karongi or nearby areas to prevent future attacks.

While the Kwara State Police Command claimed it had not been briefed, the Nigerian Army, through 22 Brigade spokesperson Lt. Stephen Nwankwo, verified the incident and identified the deceased as a vigilante who supported troops during the response operation.

This latest attack underscores the fragility of rural security systems and amplifies calls for permanent security structures in vulnerable communities.
