Northern Governors Decry Plateau Massacre, Urge Calm Across States
The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 16 Kaduna State indigenes—wedding guests and travellers—who were murdered in Plateau State.
In a statement released on Sunday, the forum’s chairman and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed grief and outrage over the incident. Speaking through his Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Misilli, Yahaya described the killings as “barbaric” and “cowardly,” asserting that such atrocities have no place in a civilised society.
“These senseless acts of violence against innocent citizens are unacceptable,” Yahaya said, adding that swift and decisive justice must follow.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Kaduna State. Yahaya also offered prayers for the repose of the departed souls and strength for their bereaved families.
Acknowledging the prompt action of security agencies and the Plateau State Government in arresting suspects, the governor urged for a thorough investigation and the immediate prosecution of those responsible. He emphasized the importance of accountability in restoring faith in the legal system and protecting citizens’ rights.
“This is not only about justice; it is about reaffirming the rule of law in our country,” Yahaya stressed.
He also made a passionate appeal to residents of Plateau, Kaduna, and neighboring areas to remain calm and avoid retaliatory violence, warning that reprisals would only deepen the crisis.
“We must not allow the actions of a few to tear apart our communities,” he said. “Let us unite in peace and trust the authorities to bring justice.”
The NSGF’s call for restraint and justice follows increased tension across regions affected by communal and sectarian violence, with leaders urging greater efforts toward unity and lasting peace.
