NBC Reaffirms Commitment to Shield Nigerian Children from Harmful Broadcast Content
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring Nigerian children are protected from consuming harmful content in the broadcast media space.
The assurance was made on Monday in Umuahia during the 2024 grand finale of a school debate competition hosted by Vision Africa, themed “Is the Social Media Impactful to Teenagers?”
Speaking on behalf of the commission, NBC’s Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, emphasized the importance of safeguarding young viewers. She said the commission remains vigilant in regulating media output to prevent destructive content from reaching the public.
“At NBC, we are making sure that consumers, especially children, only receive broadcast messages that benefit their development and guide them toward making informed life decisions,” Obi stated.
She described Nigerian children as future leaders whose exposure to media must be positive and educational.
Also speaking at the event, the wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti — represented by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere — highlighted the state government’s commitment to education and child protection.
Earlier, the President of Vision Africa and Methodist Bishop, Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, noted that the debate aimed to groom young leaders capable of shaping society across all sectors.
Methodist Girls High School Umueze, Umuahia emerged victorious over Valley View Ohafia in the final round of the competition.
