2027 Opposition Bid: El-Rufai Touts SDP as Ultimate Coalition Vehicle

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the most suitable political platform for uniting Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, El-Rufai emphasized that the SDP has the historical significance, emotional appeal, and branding strength needed to serve as a common front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I firmly believe the SDP is the best platform for the coalition. It carries legacy, sentiment, and even the name and logo are ideal,” El-Rufai said, adding that he is actively advocating for the party among political stakeholders.

Although El-Rufai has now aligned with the SDP, he clarified that the ultimate decision on which party the coalition adopts will be reached collectively by all involved leaders. “It’s not just about my preference,” he noted. “It will be a joint decision. I will play my part in ensuring unity under a single platform.”

The former Federal Capital Territory Minister also disclosed that the coalition is employing a dual-track strategy — either consolidating around an existing party like the SDP or registering a new one. This approach, he explained, is intended to prevent sabotage or political obstruction by those in power.

“From the start, the coalition leadership agreed to explore both using an existing platform and registering a new party,” El-Rufai said, indicating that talks are already underway to determine the most viable route.

While asserting that he holds some political influence within the northwest and his home state, El-Rufai emphasized that he is not acting solely on behalf of the SDP but as an independent political figure seeking change.
