Jamaica Originated Afrobeats,” Rapper Fat Joe Claims
American rapper Fat Joe has stirred controversy after asserting that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica, a claim that has sparked widespread debate within the global music community.
According to Ireporter Online, the veteran hip-hop artist made the remark during a recent episode of his “Joe and Jada” podcast, where he hosted Jamaican dancehall icon Buju Banton. During the discussion, Fat Joe stated that Jamaica was responsible for the birth of Afrobeats, while acknowledging that African culture remains foundational to global music.
Buju Banton, however, did not directly challenge the assertion. Instead, he shifted the conversation toward the origins of reggaeton, attributing its development to Panamanian artist El General and his influence on the genre’s evolution.
Afrobeats is broadly recognized by music historians and industry experts as a genre that emerged from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana. It draws significant inspiration from Afrobeat, the pioneering sound developed in the 1970s by Nigerian legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, while also incorporating elements of highlife, hip-hop, and R&B.
The statement has since generated backlash across social media platforms, with critics accusing Fat Joe of misrepresenting the genre’s origins and undermining its African roots. The controversy follows earlier remarks by Buju Banton, who in a 2024 interview criticized Afrobeats artists for allegedly drawing heavily from Jamaican reggae and dancehall without adequate acknowledgment.
