Government Receives Petitions Over Alleged Irregularities in Akeredolu’s Death

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, has confirmed that his office has received several petitions requesting a formal coroner’s inquest into the death of the former Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

In a statement released on Monday, June 30, 2025, and made available to PUNCH Online, Ajulo said the petitions came from various groups and individuals, including professional associations and residents of the late governor’s hometown. He emphasized that the public is legally empowered under the Coroners Law of Ondo State to seek clarity in circumstances involving suspicious or contested deaths.

He noted, “It is not out of place for citizens to demand its invocation when there are legitimate concerns. The Attorney General is duty-bound to act in accordance with the law.”

Ajulo added that the Ministry of Justice will strictly follow due process in assessing the requests and assured that the investigation will remain impartial, with no individual presumed guilty.

He stressed that decisions such as examining the deceased’s remains or inviting individuals for questioning rest solely with the Coroner Judge and will be made within the bounds of the law.
