He Doesn’t Need to Be President” – Chimamanda’s Stunning Praise for Peter Obi
Renowned Nigerian author and global literary figure, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has reiterated her unwavering support for Labour Party presidential hopeful Peter Obi, describing him as a rare politician who is not driven by ego or desperation for power. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s “Amazing Africans” programme, Adichie stated that while Obi desires to serve as Nigeria’s president, he does not need the position, which she described as a key indicator of genuine leadership.
According to iReporter Online, Adichie emphasized that Obi’s motivation stems from his deep concern for Nigeria’s progress and not from any personal ambition. She contrasted him with other political actors whom she claimed are consumed by the quest for power without patriotic intent.
“Peter Obi wants to be president because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be,” she said. “That distinction matters. Many are desperate for power because of ego, not service.”
The award-winning novelist pointed to Obi’s humility, consistency, and accountability as the qualities that set him apart. She stressed that he sees leadership as a duty, not an opportunity to exert dominance or demand gratitude. Adichie described him as one of the simplest men she has ever known, recalling their relationship that spans over 15 years, during which, she said, his values have remained unchanged.
Highlighting her reasons for endorsing Obi, Adichie cited her belief in the transformative potential of the right leadership for Nigeria. “My support is rooted in my love for this country,” she affirmed. “I believe we can do better with the right person at the helm.”
When asked about Obi’s political future, Adichie declined to speculate, stating that it would be premature to discuss scenarios around his potential candidacy. Nevertheless, she acknowledged his announcement to run again in 2027 and reaffirmed her belief in his capacity to lead.
It was also noted that Adichie’s support for Obi dates back to the 2023 general elections, during which she offered public endorsements through videos, birthday tributes, and an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, challenging the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process. Her attendance at the Presidential Election Tribunal further underscored her political stance.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Adichie’s statements are expected to resonate widely among Obi’s supporters and political observers alike.
