“A Colossus Is Gone”: Governor Okpebholo Reacts To DIG Osayande’s Death
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has mourned the passing of former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Parry Benjamin Osayande, describing him as a patriot of impeccable character who devoted his life to national service.
According to Ireporter Online, the governor, in a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, said Osayande’s death is not only a huge loss to Edo State but also to Nigeria as a whole. He extended condolences to the Osayande family, the Benin Kingdom, and the people of Edo State, noting that the late DIG’s commitment to peace and security will forever be remembered.
Governor Okpebholo said: “Our State has lost a giant, a man of impeccable character whose contributions to the peace and security of Nigeria—and particularly the history of the defunct Bendel State and our present Edo State—can never be forgotten.”
He recalled Osayande’s heroic exploits as Commissioner of Police in the defunct Bendel State, where he successfully confronted notorious criminal gangs of the 1980s, describing those achievements as a benchmark for policing excellence in Nigeria.
The governor further commended Osayande’s intellectual contributions and reformist drive within the Nigeria Police Force, noting that even in retirement, he remained a national asset, serving on presidential and police reform committees with unwavering dedication.
“DIG Osayande was a true son of the soil who championed the cause of Edo people in every capacity he served,” Okpebholo stated, while praying for the repose of his soul and asking God to grant his family, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear the loss.
