“Why Nollywood Actors Should Reject Restrictive Deals – Niyi Akinmolayan”
Award-winning filmmaker Niyi Akinmolayan has cautioned Nigerian actors against signing restrictive contracts that prevent them from promoting other local films, stressing that such clauses hinder Nollywood’s overall growth.
In a message shared on social media, the CEO of Anthill Studios acknowledged the financial pressures many actors face but urged them to avoid agreements that limit their ability to participate in multiple projects. He described actors as vital contributors to the industry’s development and warned that self-imposed limitations could have long-term consequences.
Akinmolayan’s statement comes as concerns mount over exclusivity clauses increasingly included in cinema and streaming deals. These provisions typically prevent actors from endorsing or appearing in promotional content for competing Nigerian projects for weeks or months around a film’s release.
Highlighting the economic realities for most Nollywood performers, he emphasized that while the temptation to accept such clauses is understandable, the potential harm to the industry outweighs short-term financial benefits. He stressed, “Actors… I know you all need money. But please stop signing contracts that tell you not to promote other films you are in. Nollywood is not that rich… and you are worth more. You are a part of the necessary ingredients for growth in the industry. Don’t stifle yourself.”
