Breaking: Senate Approves Three Ambassadorial Nominees

The confirmations were announced during plenary on Tuesday, coming about two weeks after the President transmitted the list of nominees to the Senate for consideration. The lawmakers’ decision followed the adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which recently concluded the screening of the nominees.

Those confirmed are Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are from Ogun State, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu representing Jigawa State, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State. The committee noted that the nominees were thoroughly assessed and found suitable for diplomatic responsibilities based on their credentials and experience.

Reports indicate that while the three nominees have been cleared, a larger batch of ambassadorial candidates earlier submitted by the President is still awaiting confirmation. A total of 64 other nominees screened by the committee are yet to receive Senate approval, with deliberations expected to continue at a later date.

Meanwhile, the Senate has dismissed claims circulating in political circles and on social media alleging the existence of petitions or protest letters against some of the nominees. The clarification was issued following reports that certain high-profile individuals on the list were facing opposition ahead of confirmation.

Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, explained that the chamber had not received any formal complaints from individuals, organisations or groups regarding any of the nominees. He stressed that no petitions were before the Senate at the time of screening.

The ambassadorial screening exercise, conducted by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, has continued to attract public attention, particularly due to the political profiles of some nominees. Lawmakers have disclosed that more than half of the candidates have already been screened, with the process ongoing as the Senate works toward concluding the confirmation of the remaining nominees.
